Do I need an EV Charger for my Home?
The short answer is no. But, considering you’re here, your probably looking into a better solution. The Level 1 EV Chargers that come with the purchase of your car plug into a regular 120 volt outlet and take almost a full day to charge completely. You also have the option of going to a commercial charging station for a faster recharge/fillup, but run the chance of having to wait inline and dedicating at least 30-45 minutes out of your busy schedule. As the EV market takes hold, more infrastructure will be added for charging needs and more charging stations will be built, both commercially and at your workplaces. So, the answer really depends on your needs and wants. What type of EV charger do I need?
There are currently 3 types of EV charging stations. The type of EV charger you need depends on the type of vehicle you’re charging:
- Level 1— A level one charger can be plugged into any grounded 3-prong, 120-volt outlet, and it usually takes 20 or more hours to complete a full charge of the battery.
- Level 2—These are the ideal home electric car charging ports (and the ones we install), and you need to have a dedicated 240-volt circuit installed in your garage, by your electrician, for safe and efficient charging. These electric car chargers should juice up your car’s battery in approximately 3 hours. Naturally, they’re more expensive than Level 1 chargers, but they make more sense if you are dedicated to using your electric vehicle on a regular basis.
- Level 3—These are for industrial and commercial locations and draw a lot of electricity, so they need special installation. Public car chargers are typically level 3 chargers. They can add about 160 miles to a vehicle’s battery in just 30 minutes. How much does it cost to install an EV Charger in my house?
The cost of installing an EV charger in your house depends on a number of things, but generally, you can expect to pay between $2,000-$2,500. The Level 2 EV Chargers we install need a dedicated 240 Amp outlet (the same as a major appliance like a dryer). If your home’s electric system can’t handle any more power, a new electric panel will have to be installed by a licensed electrician.
Ok, now the good part. There are many incentives that apply to installing a home EV charging station, and will probably grow as manufacturers aim to get more people driving their cars. Federal & State tax incentives as well as some incentives by your local utility company can also lessen the initial cost of installation.
