The borough of Freemansburg was settled as early as 1760 when settlers from England developed the area with Grist Mills,Carpentry Shops, Taverns and mercantile businesses. One of those settlers was Richard Freeman, whose family was active in the community and eventually led to the town being named Freemansburg in 1856. The first Bridge was built across the Lehigh River in 1814 and was rebuilt a number of times after it was washed away in floods of 1841 and 1862. The borough progressed to iron and steel manufacturing and boat building to help the fast growing Lehigh Valley economy. Today, Freemansburg, nestled in the heart of the Lehigh Valley along the banks of the Lehigh River has a population of about 2200 people. The Lock Keepers house, Freemansburg Hotel and Jacob Freeman House, and remains of the original Grist Mill still can be seen in the borough. Around June and September, the borough is the site of the famed Freemansburg Hill Climb, where motorcyclists ascend the mountain of the other side of the river with nitro-burning motorcycles.
